“Living History Competition 2018”
Organised by Malin Head Heritage Group

We want to discover what went on in our Malin Parish within living memory. We would like the older people in our area to share their stories so that everyone from the oldest to the youngest can get a better appreciation of our local heritage. We would like you to talk to or ask your oldest living relative (or neighbour) - Great Grandparents, Grandparents - about life when they were growing up, stories they heard and write up the information you discover.

Here are some suggestions about the type of information you might look for:

1.What decade were you born in or are we talking about?

2.What kind of house did you live in when you were young – how many lived there, clothes, food, etc. lighting, water, games, newspapers/books/radio? What did you eat? Had you animals? Hens? Fishing? Your School? Pastimes? Sports played? Card games?

3.What work did you or your parents do when they first left school? Age they left school? Did they make roads, fish or work on a farm? Did they go to fair days in Malin/Carn? How did they travel? Products sold? Were they ever hired or at a Hiring Fair? Describe what was it like? Where did they go to work? What were their duties and how much did they get paid?

4.Emigration - Did you or any members of your family emigrate? Where did they go- how did they travel there, how much was the ticket and where did they book it? Did they go to relations/friends? Describe the type or types of work they did and pay? Were there many other Irish there? What was the social life like? Did they return to Ireland?

5.Inistrahull – any family connections or stories from the Island

6.Malin Well Turas and other places of pilgrimage in the parish

7.Malin Head Regatta; Sports days; boat races etc.

If you have been interviewed for the Living History competition already please tell about your area when you were young and/or what your parents told you of changes that had taken place, how many families lived there, what they did and where they went and how many are left now.

Write or print on A4, on one side of page only please. Included photos will be returned. Entries by email to or Mullins Shop by Friday 23rd March 2018 ---- Don’t delay, Start today!!!
